The Decommissioning of U.S.S. Missouri
and Pearl Harbor's Newest Museum
"MIGHTY MO"
Battleship
Bulletin Board
U.S.S. Missouri is the last battleship built by the United States.
The keel for the 58,000 tons lowa-class battleship was laid in 1941 and
"Mighty Mo" was launched in 1944. The ship provided gunfire
support in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa during World War II.
On September 2, 1945, battleship Missouri was the spot for the signing
of a formal Instrument of Surrender by Japan to the Allied Forces, ending
World War II. Missouri was called to participate in several shore
bombardments off the coast of Korea between 1950 and 1953 before being
placed in "mothballs" at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton,
Washington in 1955. Missouri was recommissioned in 1986 in San Francisco,
California. Missouri's last journey was to the troubled waters of
the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Desert Storm, where 783 rounds
were fired from "Mighty Mo's" 16 inch guns. As for the
future, Missouri is as she was during the 1940's: ready for sea and always
ready to answer the call of battle. This is offered to commemorate
the Missouri and its brave crews from 1941 through 1992.
In May 1998 Missouri will be towed from her berth in Bremerton, Washington
to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii where she will be berth as a Battleship Museum.
